Makoto Okabe (pronunciation) was born in 1979 in Kakogawa City, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan.
He received his Ph.D. from the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology at the University of Tokyo in March 2008, where he conducted research on computer graphics and user interface design under the supervision of Dr. Takeo Igarashi.
He interned at Sony Computer Science Laboratory under the supervision of Dr. Ivan Poupyrev from June 2003 to March 2006. He also worked with Dr. Yasuyuki Matsushita at Microsoft Research Asia as an intern for three months from September 2004 and for two months from October 2006.
He was a postdoctoral researcher in Computer Graphics Group at Max-Planck-Institut für Informatik from April 2008.
He joined the Department of Computer Science at the University of Electro-Communications as an Assistant Professor in February 2010. He also worked as a researcher at JST PRESTO from February 2010 to March 2013.
He joined the Department of Mathematical and Systems Engineering, Graduate School of Engineering, at Shizuoka University as an Assistant Professor in August 2016.
He joined the Department of Mathematical and Systems Engineering, Graduate School of Engineering, at Shizuoka University as an Associate Professor in September 2017.
His current research interests include video analysis and animation synthesis.
